4 The Kids was born four years ago when a group of young mums living in the Upton estate decided to organise community activities for young people who were getting involved in minor vandalism due to lack of affordable activities. The area is classed as one of the more disadvantaged parts of Purbeck with over 16 % of residents out of work.
The initial efforts to organise ‘something for everyone’ to get involved in culminated in a Family Fun day attended by over 800 local residents. A DCF grant paid for part of the salary of a community organiser to set up the group and engage local residents. A year down the line and the funded project is self-sustaining and completely led by volunteers and enthusiastic community members.
